On any given day, a stroll through Lehman's parking lot will turn up license plates from many states. My father Jay Lehman, who founded the store in 1955, really enjoys walking through the lot and making note of the plates from all over the country. On the day after Thanksgiving, which is always a busy day in retail, he counted plates from over 30 states. In our parking lot. In one day.
I believe the reason he enjoys looking at all the plates is because we know folks travel from a long way away to enjoy Amish Country. Is it the rolling hills, with with windmills and silos dotting the horizon? Or the tidy white homesteads, complete with pastel sheets flapping in the breeze? Maybe the melodious clip clop of the horse and buggy, and the occasional moo of the lazy cow, that draws people to our area.
When we see the neat row of Harley Davidson motorcycles lined up; the tour buses unloading at our front doors; and the classic car shows that like to make Lehman's a stop, we remember how fortunate we are to live and work here.
Since I get to drive around in Amish country every day, perhaps I am jaded. After all, if I lived in Egypt and drove by the pyramids every day, would I consider them a sun block and not something to be marveled at? So as our roads become crowded with visitors and our aisles full of shoppers, I like to be reminded of why so many folks comes to Ohio's Amish Country and Lehman's in Kidron. Because we have something special to offer.
